Previous research indicates that the public does not reject genetic technologies as such; but rather base their assessment of a given application on judgements regarding usefulness, naturalness, possible alternatives as well as a number of other moral and risk related issues. In this context the development of cisgenic crops (where the plant is transformed only with its own genetic material) has been suggested to provide a preferable alternative to traditional transgenic applications. Since cisgenics does not transgress borders of species perhaps they will be considered ‘more natural’, and therefore more acceptable. Based on five focus group interviews (n=35) drawn from the general public of Denmark we examine whether this is the case.
