There is a growing consensus among climatologists that humans – by emissions of greenhouse gases – cause global warming, and a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations points out the livestock sector as an important contributing factor. We might expect that mitigation of global warming to the extent it is caused by this sector would be of high political priority. In fact, this issue is almost completely neglected by politicians. Several organisations have responded to this report, however. In this research project, we investigate – from an ethical perspective – different views on how to mitigate climate change to the extent it is caused by animal agriculture. The project consists of three parts. The first part is an ethical analysis of reports, statements and academic articles. Four main views can be found in this material: intensive high tech animal agriculture, extensive organic animal agriculture, laboratory-grown meat (in vitro meat, ‘meat without animals’) and vegetarianism. We clarify and discuss critically the values and ways of resolving value conflicts implicated by these four views. In the second part of the project, we carry out interviews with representatives of key stakeholders in Sweden such as farmer associations, environmental organisations, political parties, vegetarians and proponents of in vitro meat. We investigate their views on the four options, their value commitments and approaches to value conflicts. The results of the first two parts constitute the basis for the third part in which we put forward policy proposals within the ‘weak anthropocentrism’ of the Swedish legal framework.
