Conflicting responsibilities are often said to be inherent to veterinary medicine in the sense that the responsibilities of veterinarians towards their patients and their patients owners can conflict. To date veterinary ethics has strived to deal with these inherent dilemmas by focusing on individual cases and reflecting on the conflicts present in those cases. This method has provided a sufficiently strong foundation with which to deal with such conflicting responsibilities. However this case-by-case approach has become the subject of discussion as a result of significant changes in society and the veterinary profession. It has been argued that the traditional case-focused approach fails to provide tools to deal with the structural complexity of the societal and ethical problems that veterinarians are faced with today. By analysing the concepts of responsibility, professionalism and the relation of the veterinary professional with society, this presentation aims to identify the conflicts in veterinary responsibilities, how these occur, and on what level and between which parties they could occur. Based on a conceptual analysis of the concepts of responsibility and professionalism, we establish five categories in conflicting veterinary responsibilities: the area, subject, background, concept and context of his/her responsibilities. A framework has been drawn up that incorporates these categories and shows possible solutions with respect to the veterinarian’s responsibilities these categories generate. This framework helps veterinarians to address the conflicts in responsibility they are confronted with in a more structured and efficient way.
