How should we measure whether the learning and teaching environment has brought any change in student cognition and performance with respect to the defined aims of the course? This general question is pertinent in the case of ethics teaching because here the aims are often ambiguous. Is the aim that the students know different theories, is it that they are disposed to behave in a certain way, or is it both? This paper examines different tools to assess the effects of ethics teaching – all have originated in the field of medical ethics (including dentistry and nursing). They are the Problem Identification Test, the Moral Judgement Interview, the Defining Issues Test, the Test for Ethical Sensitivity in Science, the Four Component Model, the Meta-Ethical Questionnaire, and the Ethical Reasoning Tool. Finally, the methods will be evaluated in connection with a specific course in animal ethics for first-year veterinary students, a course which has now been running for eight years. Which method would be most appropriate, bearing the aim of the course in mind? Can they be combined? Will there be a need to develop a new assessment tool?
