Problems of trust are evident in the agricultural and food sector as well as in society in general. To deal with this situation, I claim that they have to be addressed as problems of trustworthiness. This paper presents five central steps that follow from a study on trust and trustworthiness (Meijboom, 2008) and that enable individuals to deal with problems of trust both from a practical and a theoretical point of view. These five steps do not solve all problems of trust, but provide clarity with respect to trustworthiness, which is a necessary condition to build and maintain trust.
