In this paper, I argue that functional foods research, marketing, and consumerism respond to a -not that novel- idea of perfection and high performance of the body. In such an ideal, functionality and hope for better health play a crucial role. The scheme of functionality refers to a set of ideas about control, risk management, and health-related ideas and concepts. In this particular case, early prevention through body interventions in the present and the achievement of enhanced body functions are key concepts in understanding functional foods.
