Values are part of the core concept of organic farming but the term organic has different meaning to different people. Organic producers may practise organic farming in ways that go beyond European standard requirements (labelled as organicPlus values), but communication about such activities can be lost, especially in long supply chains and more complex trading structures. This represents an opportunity for differentiation by communicating a better ethical quality in an increasingly competitive market, but could also have negative impact for the credibility of all organic labels. In an approach guided by the stages of the Corporate Moral Responsibility Manual the paper summarises organicPlus concerns under principal headings according to the impact on the environment, on animals, and people in terms of economic and social impact. Concerns referring to the whole system or supply chains – such as preferences for local food and concerns about the integrity of the organic supply chain – have a likely impact in several areas and are more difficult to categorise in such a way. Both private standards and public regulations have responded with more detailed standard requirements to concerns about environmental impact and animal welfare in recent years, whereas activities related to economic and social concerns are largely voluntary. Several concerns can be argued from at least two, if not three, different moral traditions. We explore whether the moral reasoning behind organicPlus concerns influences the nature of activities of the organic sector in response to them. It appears that attempts to develop verification and certification tools largely focus on concerns that are based on utilitarian reasoning. Other ways will need to be found for a credible communication of aspirational organic values (e.g. respect for animals and for nature) that are more difficult to operationalise in the form of the pass/ fail criteria required by organic certification.
