References to different cultural traditions in Europe are frequent in academic literature and in European Union (EU) documents on science, ethics and society. As a rule there is no elaboration of the topic. Rather, it appears to be widespread assumptions that the differences are well known and that they represent an embarrassing fact: the lack of European unity. Thus, the existence of different traditions in Europe is seen as an obstacle to European unity. The current EU approach to Science in Society issues provides illustration of some possible, practical implications of this idea about unity. Originating in open discussion between different understandings of the role of science in society, the field now seems to be marked by closure and the pretence of consensus, linking ethics primarily to rules and regulation, and leaving ethical reflection and discussion behind. This paper argues that the existence of different European traditions and frameworks of thought may be viewed and used as a source of enlightenment, providing access to many different perspectives on reality. This includes different assumptions about the nature of ethical challenges and how they ought to be dealt with. Differences and disagreements, if hidden, may result in embittered conflicts, but if recognized, they may further efforts to deal in a concerted way with science-related ethical challenges. Therefore, different European traditions and frameworks of thought deserve enquiry rather than denial.
