There is a need for a practical animal ethics that can contribute to a humane keeping of animals, allowing animals to have a function in society while still granting them a good life. The Brambell committeeâs five freedoms are important principles, but they may be strengthened by including them in a more general framework. The four principles of biomedical ethics, defended by Beauchamp and Childress since 1979, have been widely embraced as an ethical framework among health care professionals. In this paper Beauchamp and Childressâ four principles â respect for autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, and justice â are discussed and applied to the field of animal ethics. We suggest that although the principled approach in itself may be valuable, the principles proposed for the biomedical domain need to be adapted to the animal ethics domain. Non-maleficence and beneficence seem relevant, but there are problems with applying autonomy and justice straight off. Autonomy can be applied when understood in terms of allowing a species-specific behaviour. Respect for dignity is suggested to complement respect for autonomy, and it is suggested that respect for intrinsic value should be added as an aspect of respect for dignity. Justice may be an applicable principle, but a theory of justice that can incorporate animals first has to be further developed.
