The Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) is a French public organization devoted to competitive project funding in both fundamental and applied research. ANR addresses both public research institutions and industries with a double mission of producing new knowledge and promoting interaction between public and industrial laboratories through the development of partnerships. The research programmes proposed by ANR are translated into publicly available calls for proposals. In the past four years, six programmes related to food, agriculture and sustainable development were launched. All programmes and their subsequent calls for proposals were drafted independently and therefore, ethical issues were not equally dealt with or taken into account in a consistent way. Over time, progress has been made drafting the calls for proposals from specifically ‘scientific accuracy and correctness’ to a more ‘ethical awareness’. But how are the ethical issues of the calls translated in the research proposals and in the research projects? Is the presentation of a call for proposals sufficient to lead to an ethically aware research project? What are the most frequent ethical issues found in the research projects? This paper presents the way ANR has dealt with these issues, and gives examples of ethical issues raised by research projects.
