Agriculture is an ancient activity with many different functions. These functions can be summarised under 6 Fâs, the classic âFoodâ, âFeedâ, âFuelâ, âFibreâ, and two additions: âFlowerâ, and âFunâ. Historically the production of Fuel and Fibre have lost their importance, but they will regain importance due to climate change policies and fossil fuel shortages. Societal evolutions will increase the importance of Flower and Fun. All six functions will have to be fulfilled, simultaneously, in a framework in which inputs (soil, water, air) are increasingly tight. The debate and the ethical analysis are complicated by oppositions between expected evolutions, moral intuitions and/or practical possibilities, especially when different timescales are considered. In literature, the different functions are often considered independently, although the interactions between them are the main reason for the complexity of the analysis, and for the magnitude of the challenges we face. The multitude of direct and indirect, technical and economical connections make it impossible to separate the different functions. The 6F model shows, by summarising and structuring the future challenges, that production increases will be necessary and input shortages will grow, and therefore that there is no other option than intensification. A well-understood intensification of agriculture is not only unavoidable, but even preferable and necessary. The rest is merely a question of priorities and boundary conditions.
