Animal Ethics Dilemma (AED) was launched in 2006, as a free online learning resource. The programme provides a framework for ethical analysis using five ethical perspectives. Based on practical experience, including evaluations from students, it will be argued that through the use of the programme students develop a better understanding for what it means to have a certain ethical view – as distinguished from seeing ethics as a word-game with no real content. The practical experiences presented derive from the use of the programme at three universities in Europe: Dublin (UCD), Copenhagen (UC) and Sweden (SLU). At UCD, the programme is used in three modules: a university wide elective module on animal ethics, the preclinical veterinary programme and an online graduate certificate in canine sports medicine. At the BSc programme in Veterinary Medicine, University of Copenhagen, the programme is used as part of a veterinary course aimed at presenting animal ethics and veterinary roles and tasks. At SLU, the programme is used in three programmes and five different courses: Agricultural Sciences, Agricultural Sciences (elective), veterinary studies: Ethology and Animal Welfare (Level 1 and 3). The use of the programme ranges from providing an introductory lecture to animal ethics and assigning students to complete the case studies in the programme to structuring class discussions and assignments around the case studies in the programme. The time dedicated to teaching animal ethics in each course varies; the programme thus provides a facility to further develop concepts introduced in the classroom.
