Previous research has tentatively suggested that the use of animals in research into a disease that is related to lifestyle, such as obesity, is not publicly justified to the same extent as research into other life-threatening diseases. The view is that obesity is self-inflicted, and therefore obese people should change their lifestyle instead of sacrificing animals in research that is aimed at the development of new food products and ingredients targeting obesity. Such a view is challenged by strong evidence showing that obesity and obesity-related diseases can develop as a result of factors that have nothing to do with individual choices and habits. It may be hypothesized that the negative stance on the use of animals in research on obesity is based on a lack of awareness of this evidence. It may also be hypothesized that people who are willing to accept animal research into other life-threatening diseases will change their opinion in favour of obesity-related animal research when they have been confronted with this evidence. These hypotheses are explored with the help of data from five focus group meetings held in Denmark in which ordinary citizens debated the ethical justification for the use of animals in medical research. The results of this deliberation process are reported and are juxtaposed with the views of anti-vivisectionists and the medical profession.
