The objective of the interdisciplinary project described in this paper was to explore whether the production of biomass for energy can be ethically sound and live up to sustainability criteria. In a first step, an Ethical Delphi was carried out with an interdisciplinary body of 27 experts, who answered three questionnaires on bioenergy. Generally the experts agreed that biomass production for energy can substantially contribute to meeting future energy demand. Nevertheless, they did not consider bioenergy as a universal remedy for energy scarcity, but rather as one element in a comprehensive portfolio of energy sources to ensure a sustainable energy policy on the local, national and international level. In the next step of the project the results of the Ethical Delphi will be correlated with paradigmatic and normative concepts that influence the debate in order to create an ‘Ethical Matrix’ tailored to bioenergy. Detailed case studies will finally deliver guidance for ethically sound bioenergy in Bavaria. This article presents the first results of the Ethical Delphi, method descriptions and a working hypothesis that presents a real option for an ethically sound, decentralised bioenergy production in Bavaria.
