Summary

On-farm research aiming to increase the supply of feed for small ruminants using fallow land to produce pasture and feed legume crops has been conducted on farms in north-west Syria since 1981. Two projects are located where annual rainfall is 200-350 mm and common vetch (Vicia sativa) and chickling vetch (Lathyrus sativus) are being grown after barley crops for grazing and production of grain and straw. In the third project, in an area where rainfall is 250-450 mm, milk production of sheep grazing annual medic (Medicago sp.) pastures is being measured.

At the grazing stage, vetch yielded more herbage than chickling but at the mature stage chickling produced more grain than vetch and a similar amount of straw. Both species responded well to application of phosphate fertilizer. Barley grain and straw yields were lower when grown after unfertilized feed legumes than after a fallow year. Barley benefited from the phosphate applied to the feed legumes in the previous year.

In a year when native pastures were plentiful, milk production from ewes grazing vetch, chickling and native pastures was similar but daily liveweight gains of ewes on the feed legume pastures were higher. Lamb daily liveweight gains on feed legume pastures ranged from 100 to 300 g and liveweight gains reached 300 kg/ha. Stocking rates of ewes grazing annual medic pastures were 10 to 18 ewes/ha during a 6 month period and milk production reached 1700 kg/ha. These levels of output make feed and pasture legumes highly profitable for introducing into farming systems in West Asia. Adoption of the new technologies is largely dependent on availability of seeds and use of phosphate fertilizer.
