Résumé

L’élevage ovin algérien a connu une très forte croissance depuis l’Indépendance en 1962. Cette croissance résulte des conditions créées par la politique agricole: contrôle du marché intérieur et importations massives de céréales; blocage des importations et marché intérieur libre pour les viandes rouges. Le moteur de cette croissance est la très forte demande intérieure, amplifiée par la croissance démographique. C’est ainsi que les viandes rouges sont les principales productions de la céréaliculture algérienne. Pour autant les performances techniques de cet élevage n’ont pas augmenté; elles sont aujourd’hui inférieures à celles d’il y a vingt ans: les fluctuations des prix des ressources fourragères, liées à celles de la météorologie, conduisent à privilégier l’augmentation des effectifs au détriment de celle de la production de viande. C’est ainsi que la viande ovine algérienne est aujourd’hui la plus chère du monde.
