Abstract

About 38.000.000 cattle, including 15.456.000 cows, are raised in the Mediterranean Area (MA), involving 18 Countries. They belong to 78 cattle breeds: 5 are milked and cosmopolitan, 19 are milked and autochthonous, 7 are beef specialized, 30 are beef non-specialized, 17 are in danger of extinction; several crosses are also raised. 47% of all the milked cows raised in the MA are autochthonous: they produce 17% of the total milk (Table 2); corresponding values for the African region of the MA are 75% and 52%; for the Asian region these are 53% and 25% and for the European region they are 25% and 7%. Similar estimates are made, concerning meat production (Table 3). Some biometrical and production parameters and some vital statistics are reported, according to genotype (Table 1). Proposals to improve the knowledge of cattle raised in the MA are made.
