Summary

Three sheep breeding schemes were compared in a cereal production system: 1) purebred Sardi, 2) three-way crossbreeding involving a meat breed, the prolific D’man breed and the native Sardi breed, and 3) synthetic breed having 50% D’man and 50% Sardi genes. The traits studied were fertility (conception rate), prolificacy, lamb survival, lamb weight at 90 days, ewe productivity (litter weight at 90 days), and dressing percentage of lamb carcasses. It appears that ewe productivity from schemes 1, 2 and 3 were 18.6 kg, 31.1 kg and 30.0 kg per lambing, respectively, and dressing percentages were 53%, 56% and 55%, respectively. It was concluded that crossbreeding of sheep, in a cereal production system, is by far better than purebreeding, regardless of its practical difficulties on the field.
