Summary

The present trial was conducted in two periods with 20 male and female calves. Two types of feed (silage and hay) were tested. Period 1 started 3 days after birth and was completed when calves reached 8 weeks of age (weaning). Period 2 started at weaning and ended when animals were six months old.

In period 1, calves were separated in two groups (1 and 2) and both received a total amount of 171.5 1 of milk replacer, up to 1.5 kg/day concentrates, and free access to water. The roughage fraction of the ration consisted of alfalfa hay for group 1 and maize silage for group 2, both offered “ad libitum”. Total dry matter intake (DMI) was 38.78 kg and 40.52 kg for groups 1 and 2; average daily gains (ADG) for groups 1 and 2 were 0.422 and 0.436 kg/d; feed efficiency (kg dry matter intake/kg gain) was 1.87 and 1.90 for groups 1 and 2, respectively.

In period 2, the first group was divided in two sub-groups (A and B) and the second was maintained on the original treatment. Group 1 A kept the same treatment (hay) and 1 B changed from hay to maize silage. Concentrate (1.5 kg/day) and water was available for all groups. DMI, ADG and feed efficiency were 187.71 kg, 0.612 kg and 2.74 for group 1 A; for group 1 B: 265.09 kg, 0.739 kg and 3.20 and for group 2: 255.97 kg, 0.746 kg and 3.06, respectively.
