Abstract

The actual and potential role of legumes is reviewed for the mediterranean land use zones: pastoral, cereal, and high rainfall zone, as well as for irrigated, marginal, and forest grazing land. The actual cultivated area of forages legumes tends to increase with increasing water availability in the whole region as well as in individual countries. Attempts to expand legumes to drier areas by the introduction and adoption of the Australian ley farming system and the constraints encountered are discussed in detail.
