Summary

The efficiency of the ions S04⁼ and NH4⁺ as ingestion depressors for feed offered ad libitum to 28 sheep kept in individual boxes for 45 days was tested. Feed treatments were: barley grain + urea dilution (0.38 M) (0.6 1 water/kg barley DM) served as a control (To), To + (6 gm ammonium sulphate/kg DM) (T1), To + (4.6 g ammonium chloride/kg DM) (T2) and To + (6.5 g sodium sulphate/kgDM) (T3). Individual daily intake and weight changes were determined during the experiment. Results show significant differences (p < 0.05) between control To and the other treatments in feed intake, but there were no significant differences among Tl, T2 and T3. No differences were found among the four treatments in the variations in weight. This suggests that these substances may be used in the foodstuffs offered ad libitum as a complement or replacement for grazing. They have the advantage of being self-regulating, as they do not penalize the consumption of grass and they reduce the labor and handling time.
