Summary

Sheep and goat production has long been, and still is, a traditional and important activity of rural societies in the Mediterranean area since prehistoric times. Milk, red meat, wool, hair and hides are provided consistently in this region for human needs by multiple purpose breeds of low productivity, raised mainly under extensive conditions.

All these breeds of small ruminants show patterns of reproductive periodicity and the breeding season extends usually from the beginning of June to the end of October. However, the duration and the depth of the anoestrous period varies greatly among the breeds and further many breeds in several countries in the Mediterranean area have been reported to manifest oestrous activity throughout the year and lambs and kids can be born at any time of the year. Therefore, the reproductive potential which is the most important factor affecting efficiency of production in small ruminants, varies markedly among breeds in this region.

Besides, large differences have been observed in mature body weight, milk, wool and hair production and carcass characteristics among the existing breeds, which could suggest that there is a large exploitable biological potential available in this area to further improve the productivity of small ruminant populations.
