Abstract

This study was carried out during 1984-86 in 16 flocks selected from 220 studied flocks in E1 Hajeb (Morocco).

The objectives of this study were to assess the losses resulting from abortion and infertility of ewes under field conditions. The involvement of specific infectious agents in abortion and infertility was estimated by a retrospective serological analysis.

Infertility rate was 22.2% in 1984–85 and 16.7% in 1985–86. Abortion rate was 6% for both years. Out of the 16 study flocks examined only one was positive for bluetongue virus (6.2%), one for Brucella sp (6.2%) and one for Coxiella burnetti (6.2%). Six flocks were positive for Chlamydia psittaci (37.5%), twelve flocks for Toxoplasma gondii (75%), eleven flocks for L. pomona (69%) and one for L. hardjo (6.2%).
