Summary

An approach based on epidemiological data for modelling production loss caused by acclimatization and diseases is presented. The data set analyzed comprised information from about 35.000 Israeli-Holstein dairy cows. The approach presented can be applied to breed against acclimatization problems and disease susceptibility. The analysis revealed that heritability estimates of production losses caused by acclimatization and diseases are rather high and range almost from 9% to 15%. In contrast to the presented approach, heritability estimates in the threshold model for disease frequencies were rather low (<4.0%). A progeny breeding program including the reaction to acclimatization and disease could increase the efficiency by 40%.
