Abstract

Turkey is one of the leading goat producing countries in the world with more than 13 million goats. Most of the goats are low producing native breeds.

Among the native breeds, Hair goat is the dominant breed and makes almost 85% of the total goat population. Angora goat has a special importance in goat production of the country. They are about 1.9 million heads in the population. In addition there are some 300–400 thousand heads of Kilis goats kept with the objectives to improve litter size and milk yield and to avoid some disadvantages of native breeds.

The crossbreeding experiment was formed from 2-year old and 3-year old Çukurova and Taurus does. The Çukurova type, to be introduced in the lowlands is based on the Kilis goat. The Taurus type to be introduced in highland and mountainous area is based on the Hair goat.

The litter size for 3-year old does were found to be 1.41 and 1.27 for Çukurova and Taurus genotypes respectively. The mean corrected milk yields (according to year and age) of Taurus and Çukurova does were 376.0 ± 13.93 and 352.3 ± 14.75 kg respectively.
