Abstract

An attempt has been made to compare (with the example of milk production) the policy of animal production improvement, led by two groups of countries in the same geographical area (Maghreb and Mediterranean Europe). Two great differences were revealed between these two groups:

- Levels of milk production per cow or per inhabitant in Maghreb increased from 1969 to 1986, but were much lower than that in the Mediterranean countries of Europe.

- A great part of the improvement in milk production has been based on an increase in the number of lactating cows, contrary to what happened in Europe where this improvement was essentially based on an increase of milk yield per cow. That explains the poor results in milk production in Maghreb, since from 1969 to 1986 milk yield per cow increased by 180 kg vs 573 kg in Europe and milk yield per inhabitant increased by only 4.8 kg vs 38 kg in Europe.
