Summary

Wheat straw was treated with ammonium hydroxide at 38Â°C, 60Â°C and 82Â°C. The total nitrogen and, mainly, the percentage of soluble nitrogen of the straw treated at 82Â°C (2.43% and 54.22%) were significantly lower than those obtained at 60Â°C (2.57% and 70.6%).

Barley straw was treated with ammonia at 10Â°C, 35Â°C and 60Â°C. The average value obtained for the estimated dry matter digestibility at 60Â°C (57%) was significantly lower than that obtained at 35Â°C (59%). There were significant effects (P<0.01) due to the interaction between the temperature and the level of ammonia and also with the duration of the treatment.
