Summary

Soil and climate characteristics of the Mediterranean areas of Portugal are briefly described. The main types of pastures and forages of these areas are identified, with special references to the contribution of grass species in different situations. References are given concerning the nutritive value of the dominant grasses under different utilization systems, including the stages of development corresponding to the maximum yield of energy per hectare in annual grasses produced for cutting and conservation.
