Progress in recent years in the field of fibre digestion in ruminants has been facilitated through the development of new techniques, both for the study of differences between fibre sources and effect of upgrading and the study of the rumen environment for cellulolysis.
The progress on the possibility of selecting for higher quality of straw without sacrificing yield and quality of the grain will be discussed in detail together with the possibilities of upgrading straw by different methods.
The progress in understanding of supplementation to support mainly roughage diets will be discussed together with studies on strategic use of supplement in critical periods.
Finally the effect of type of animal and variation between animals in their ability to utilize roughages will be discussed with particular reference to the sometimes uncritical importations of exotic animals. It is argued that future livestock policies must increasingly take into account the suitability of animals both for environmental consequences and adequate utilization.
