Abstract

The field survey conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture of Egypt in 1984/1985 in the Coastal Zone of Western Desert (CZWD) indicated that the number of small ruminants was doubled over two decades. The study estimated the level of lamb production at 17 kg weaned lamb/ewe/yr and referred to a deterioration in natural range. These data were analyzed in an effort to integrate information on level of lamb production, its nutrient requirements and availability from natural range.

It was calculated that natural range dry matter potentiality per year suffices only 3/4 m head of sheep and goats in a mixed herd comprised of 4:1. Stocking rate (ha/h/yr) was 1.6. The data also show that maximum intake from range is not sufficient to meet energy and protein requirements of the prevailing lamb/kid production level and that at least 50% of that energy must be introduced from outside the NWCZ in the form of feed concentrates. This energy deficit is equivalent to 198 kg of barley per ewe/doe per year or to 177 kg wheat grains. Total annual amount of cereal grains consumed by mature ewes and does, fattened male lambs and kids and for growing female lambs and kids is about 164,000 t.

Extra inputs of high energy-containing concentrates are required for higher levels of lamb/kids production.

It was concluded that with the increasing stocking rates and deteriorating condition of natural ranges, the prevailing production system can be sustained only through continued and increased input of grains to keep the system’s financial viability.
