Summary

Throughout the Mediterranean region, modes of livestock production are evolving away from what were predominantly nomadic, transhumant and subsistence systems towards more static and commercial enterprises. Although most natural pastures are still utilized up to (and beyond) their stocking capacities, dependence on other sources of feed has grown rapidly. The present paper considers the implications of this for other forms of agriculture, in particular arable cropping and cereal production. The two main winter cereals, wheat and barley, are very differently utilized, the one entirely for human food, the other - with local exceptions - very largely for animal feed. As feed demands and prices increase, the balance between wheat and barley in arable farming may shift. However, both cereals grow best in rotation with legumes, many of which are excellent sources of feed. The task of the agronomist is to devise viable cropping systems that maximize the output of both food and feed from a spectrum of soil and rainfall zones, in relation both to market demand and to the long-term conservation of the very fragile natural resource base.
