Summary

On-farm livestock data collection is a major constraint in research in tropical countries. Before starting data collection the farming system has to be defined and one or more objectives and hypotheses have to be formulated, from which the statistical models can be derived. The use of a database system might help the researcher to think about the layout of the survey and how the required data can be processed as conveniently as possible. Data gathered in the field have to be processed within a short time after collection by a person who has knowledge of the data. The results of the statistical analyses can also be used to develop a simulation model or to be compared with simulation output or to validate an existing model. User-friendly software can stimulate researchers to make more use of computers for systematic data recording and processing. For the analysis of smallholder systems these programs should contain possibilities of including interactions between livestock production and other farming systems components.
