Summary

In quest of environmentally balanced grassland-based dairy farming systems in the Netherlands, also meeting future standards for ammonia emission, a series of dairy farming scenarios is explored. Forage N uptake is restricted to 300 kg.ha⁻¹ and maximum N and P losses to 180 and 8.7 kg.ha⁻¹, respectively. The scenarios are characterized by a variation in dry matter yield (DMY) from 14.6 to 7.5 tonne.ha⁻¹, corresponding with a net energy content (NE₁) of the forage from 5.8 to 6.8 MJ kg⁻¹ DM, and a crude protein content from 128 to 252 g.kg⁻¹ DM. Milk yield per cow (MYC) was respectively set on 5 to 10 tonne.cow⁻¹. All model milk quota outputs of these and intermediate scenarios amount to 15 tonne.ha⁻¹. The scenario with the highest DMY and the lowest MYC, compared with the extreme alternative (lowest DMY and highest MYC), results in a higher N efficiency at dairy farming system level (0.41 vs 0.33), a shift of urine N towards faecal N, a higher faecal dry matter excretion, a lower N to organic matter ratio in the excreta (74 vs 178 g N kg⁻¹ OM) and the predicted ammonia emission is 70% lower.

Following the scenario with the highest DMY and the lowest MYC, the OM in stubble and roots is higher, resulting in a lower N to OM ratio in the biomass degraded by the soil microflora (33 vs 60 g N kg⁻¹ OM).

On the longer term, it is suggested that the scenario of a higher DMY together with an increased NE₁/N ratio makes the farming system operating in better balance with the ecosystem, by safeguarding the structure of the soil, supporting the soil microflora and improve non-fertilizer N supply.
