Summary

Sustainability is a socially constructed concept whose meaning depends on the context. Aspects of the concept of sustainability can be attached to a feeding system and this is examined in relation to existing farming situations. The rational management of rangeland and forestry systems is taken as an example of organisation” and planning of the use of renewable local resources. The multiple use of specific feed resources and the development of mixed pasture-cropping systems are considered as examples of diversification and exploitation of local resources. The integration of diverse feed resources and the combination of activities in a given area constitute a global approach to land use; it aims at reducing the use of external inputs whilst enhancing on-farm resources and nutrient recycling. Finally, ensuring the security and adaptative capability of feeding systems is addressed. This approach should facilitate the development of mixed and diversified systems, with alternative productive objectives, low environmental impact and reduced economic hazards. There is a need to combine several activities into dynamic agricultural systems, linking farmers and the wider rural community through coordinated actions that are appropriate to a range of local conditions.
