Summary

This paper describes a method for treatment of the slurry accumulated under the pigs in a herd of slaughter pigs. With this method it is possible to reduce the concentration of ammonia in the air which is of importance to the daily growth and to a reduction of the fattening period.

A pig herd of 1000 slaughter pigs was divided into two groups: one experimental group (E) and one control group (T). In group E, âElorisan Odor Lessâ 90 g/m3 of slurry was applied every two weeks.

The grouping was done on October 4 1995, when the E group had an average weight of 107 kg and on December 28 1995 when the animals in group T had an average weight of 95 kg. During this period the daily weight gain amounted to 737 for group E and to 579 g for group T. Each week air samples as well as the values of N, P and K in the slurry were collected.

The results obtained indicate a reduction of ammonia in the air and a significant increase in N, P and K in the slurry of group E as opposed to group T.
