Summary

The effect of two lambing seasons (autumn vs winter) on the output/input balance of a irrigated dairy sheep farming system was evaluate during 1994-1995. Two system-models were set up in autumn 1993, both consisting of 0.5 ha of perennial species, 0.3 ha of lucerne and 0.4 ha of Italian ryegrass replaced in summer by sorghum. Each system-model was rotationally grazed by 24 mature Sarda ewes (stocking rate 20 ewes/ha), lambing respectively in Autumn (group A) and in Winter (group W). Milk production was higher in W then A (milk yield l/ewe: 309 us 260, P<0.05, in 1994; 250 vs 238 n.s. in 1995). The milk quality was higher in A than in W (fat %: 6.74 vs 6.51, n.s., in 1994; 6.90 vs 6.58 P<0.05, in 1995; protein %: 5.56 vs 5.45, n.s. in 1994; 5.59 vs 5.40 P<0.05, in 1995). Milk and weaned lamb production per hectare were respectively on average 11 and 9% higher in W than in A. Hay production was similar in both systems. Concentrate and hay consumption tended to be higher in A then W averaging to 2.61 (A) and 1.98 (W) t/ha year and 4.6 (A) and 4.3 (W) t/ha year. On the basis of the first two year results the delay of lambing seems interesting to improve the economical return from dairy sheep farming systems based on irrigated pasture.
