Summary

This study was undertaken to assess the effects of concentrate supplementation on strongylid egg shedding and milk production in sheep. The experiment was carried out on 72 ewes with similar body condition scores (BCS), and lasted from lambing to ten weeks afterwards. All animals were kept under the same ad libitum forage diet, but received controlled amounts of concentrate. Group A received 900 g/day, group M received 600 g/day, and group B received 300 g/day of concentrate. Fecal fecal egg count, haematologic variables, BCS and milk production were weekly monitored during the experiment. No significant differences in egg shedding between groups were observed at the beginning of the experiment, but at the end Group A showed significantly lower egg counts, as well as increased BCS (p < 0.05). No differences in haematologic and biochemical variables were observed between groups. Differences in milk production were observed between groups B and M (p < 0.05). It was concluded that concentrate supplementation had beneficial effects on control of strongylid egg shedding and milk production.
