Summary

Since 1995, a programme funded by EC (Reg. 2052/88 objective 5b) for the development of rural areas has been carried out in two farms (“Pilot farms”) of Alta Langa (Cuneo province, N-W Italy). Traditional livestock farming systems, based on cattle breeding (Piemontese beef cattle and Valdostana Red Pied dairy cattle, recently introduced) and dairy sheep breeding (Delle Langhe) have been reorganised on extensive basis; the following intervention has been formulated: 1) development of rational grazing systems (e.g.: the improvement of the swards, the adoption of more adequate equipment and shelters, the respecting of functional and economic exigencies); 2) exploitation of natural resources with respect of environment and landscape; 3) technical training to improve human resources and to obtain skilled labour.

The first results demonstrate a beneficial effect of these transformations on animal production and pasture productivity. The “Pilot farms” experience will be transferred to other farms with the objective to enhance their productivity and to improve the quality of life of families living in these marginal areas, while preserving a peculiar environment.
