Summary

This paper describes a study that aimed at identifying constraints and potentials for livestock production in Guinea-Bissau, with a view to providing a basis for designing appropriate policy guidelines. The study focused on the Balanta and the Fula production systems; it comprised a household socio-economic survey, monitoring of cattle, sheep, goat and pig herds, an animal health survey, and a market survey. These comprehensive data were used to investigate changes in the livestock production and their implications for farming systems.

Simulation studies indicated the economic benefits that might arise from fodder supplementation in N’Dama cattle herds; the technical, biological, and social complexities of such innovation are discussed. The possibilities for increasing cattle economic efficiency by improving health status are also analysed. Djallonke sheep and West African Dwarf goats showed good productivity under the current free range system. Village pig production makes an important contribution to the Balanta system but is severely limited by African swine fever outbreaks. It is stressed that well targeted agricultural projects and extension messages might improve farmers’ ability to avoid the disease. The information provided is suggested as being an important tool for future livestock development policies.
