Summary

The present paper is the summary of a research project with the aim of explaining variations in milk production between herds by focussing on the individual farmer. The emphasis is on social factors that can be considered as parts of, or linked to, the faculty “An Eye for the Animals”, defined as a special competence to make animals thrive and produce. The study was based on semi-structured interviews with 37 farmers in 2 counties in Sweden. The subjects dealt with were e.g. professional training, sources of information, milk production as a life style, attitude toward animals. The results showed that the social situation e.g. in relation to labour or history of the farm was very important for milk production. Farmers with “An Eye for the Animals” talked more with the animals, expressed stronger feelings for the animals and were prepared to use more time for the management. There was no difference between the farmers concerning education, experience or access to information but the interest and the way the knowledge was used differed between farmer types.
