Summary

A framework for Critical Control Points Analysis of dairy calf health management was proposed. Critical points in French production systems were identified and their effects on morbidity and mortality between 1 and 15 days were quantified. Data issued from a survey in 236 farms were analysed with multiple linear models. Lack of systematic early distribution of colostrum, a high proportion of calving in pasture (assumed to be associated with lower surveillance of colostrum intake), mastitis at calving, contact of calves with older calves, with calves purchased from other herds or with older cattle were risk factors increasing significantly morbidity whereas milk feeding to diarrheic calves was associated with higher mortality. These factors can still be considered as critical points in current production systems, although most of them are easily controllable. Quantification of the effects of critical control points provides information to discuss implementation of control actions in farms for better calf health management.
