Summary

For assessing livestock farming systems (LFS) of potential value in a sustainability scope at the regional level, we used an approach of the technical operation and the land use pattern of the farms as a complement to a classical analysis of their technico-economical results.

In the region studied, cattle raising for store calves is the main farming activity. During the last years, most of the farmers increased herd sizes and developed diverse strategies of change in the farmland spatial organisation traits and the farm technical operation. We analysed them within an exhaustive survey of the farms in 5 villages (n= 34 cattle farms). The farmers that may play a major role in the next future (the youngest and the married ones with dependent children) own 50 % of the farms and over 70 % of the cattle numbers. They developed two main LFS. The first one, adapted from the traditional system for the local hardy breed Gasconne, benefits each of the pastoral resources types available. The other one, derived from the intensive model, based on specialised meet breeds, concentrates on the less constrained landscape units by the villages (abandonment of the altitude collective pastures, etc.). Whilst very contrasted with respect to landscape preservation prospects, these two LFS types appear as presenting similar economical gross margins per farm and working unit. Our results suggest also there could be a low threshold (40 cows) in the actual increase of the economic return when increasing herd size under the local conditions.
