From 2008 till 2011 the effect of drinking water in or near the nest box when the kits start eating was studied at Edelveen. In 2008 and 2009 the water consumption from an extra drinking nipple inside of the nest box was high (between 35 and 50 days, 365 ml/litter/day). This resulted in 2010 and 2011 in a behaviour study of the litters (30 to 50 days post whelping). The test group of mink received an extra drinking nipple inside of the nest box or near the entrance. Kits with water in or near the box started drinking 4 days earlier than controls. Between 35 and 45 days the frequency of consuming water was 3 times higher, of saliva licking 3 times lower and kits were 2 times calmer. Kit growth and kit losses tended to be better in the testing group in all 4 years. In 2010 5% of the control females suffered from nursing sickness, none in testing group. Mothers in the testing groups lost 30% less weight between 30 and 50 days, than did the controls. Females with the lowest weight loss had the heaviest kits at 50 days of age and a better reproduction next year. Drinking water close to the kits apparently improved their own and their mothers welfare.
