Malnutrition during foetal life might induce structural and metabolic changes in animals and humans. Studies in mink have shown that maternal (F₀-generation) protein-malnutrition leads to lower birth weight of the F₁, but higher birth weight of the F₂-generation and leads to changes in some key hepatic enzymes in the F₁ and F₂-generation foetal tissue. Our objectives were to study a group of seventy seven F₁-generation mink dams during their first gestation and lactation in order to investigate how the level of protein provision to the their mothers during foetal life (low – L₁ or control – C₁) and their own gestational exposure to either low (L₂) or adequate control (C₂) protein provision affected reproductive performance, preweaning kit growth and quantitative metabolism traits Furthermore, the post weaning growth, and the response to either low or adequate protein diet at 10, 26, and 50 weeks of age was studied in 16 of their male kits. The quantitative metabolism traits of the dams were mainly affected by the gestation diet at not foetal life treatment. Despite this, birth weight, pre-weaning and post-weaning growth of the males were mainly affected by interactions between foetal life protein provision of both the F₁ and F₂ generation.
