Three hundred thirty one arctic blue, polar, half polar or shadow fox vixen one to six years of age were utilized to investigate effects of zinc, manganese and iron supplementation on whelping rate, morbidity and pup mortality. Treatments consisted of a control diet with no supplemental trace minerals, or or a control diet with additional 100 mg/kg Zn, 25 mg/kg Mn and 40 mg/kg Fe (CTM – complexed trace mineral diet). Treatment diets were individually fed to vixen and offered ad libitum one week prior to artificial insemination through weaning. As-fed intake averaged approximately 550 g/hd/d. Diets contained 30 and 105 mg/kg Zn, 9 and 27 mg/kg Mn, 90 and 130 mg/kg Fe for control and CTM treatments, DM basis. Vixen were bred artificially to one of 47 sires with 8 siring more than 10 vixen each. Results were analyzed using Proc Glimmix of SAS for categorical data. Eighty percent of vixen were primiparous with remaining vixen equally distributed 2 to 6 gestations. There was no significant age by treatment interaction effects. Each year of vixen age translated into 0.64 more pups per litter (P=0.025). Overall, 26% of vixen remained empty with a probability of 0.33 for control and 0.20 for CTM (P=0.007). The probability of at least one live pup at 2 d was Control = 0.55 vs. CTM = 0.68 (P=0.02). Analysis of sire and dam variation in litter size at 2 d (dead+alive) showed no significance. There were no significant treatment differences in number of pups alive at 2 d, 7 d or 49 d. The trend was more pups alive at 49 d for CTM (4.3 pups) vs. control (3.6 pups) (P=0.12). Results indicate supplementation with CTM helped reduced number of empty vixen and tended to increase live pups at weaning.
