Diarrhea in the pre-weaning period (also known as ‘greasy kits’, ‘ sticky kits’ or pre-weaning diarrhea syndrome) in mink is known in all mink-producing countries in the northern hemisphere, and has been observed on commercial mink farms in Denmark for more than 50 years. The definition of ‘wet kits’ is when mink kits develop a greasy, sticky exudate on the skin surface especially in the neck, and tail, present a red and swollen perianal region, severe diarrhea, and kits often exhibit distressed behaviour. During the period 2002-2009 several field and experimental investigations were performed with the aim to investigate the etiology of the pre-weaning diarrhea (greasy kits syndrome) in mink kits, and with focus on investigation of astrovirus and calici virus as important triggering factors. These investigations were performed in collaboration between the Swedish and Danish National Veterinary Institutes and the Danish Fur Breeders Association. The investigations included longitudinal studies systematically following the course of disease on farms during outbreaks as well as the development of an experimental model, including gross pathological and histopathological studies of organ samples from mink kits. Here were summarize results of several studies confirming the association between astroviral and caliciviral infections and pre-weaning diarrhea in mink kits and discuss the impact of the results.
