This paper focuses on resources related to success in small scale food processing firms. During the last decade, establishment of new food processing firms has increased in the Nordic countries. These firms, which are often farm based, seek out new income sources through value-added processing of their self-produced raw material. However, as rivalry in the food market is quite intense, it is not easy for these firms to position themselves in the food market and obtain success. This paper examines what kind of resources characterise those firms that succeed.

The empirical study is based on survey data collected among small scale food processing firms in Norway, Sweden and Finland, and a broad spectrum of resources related to success are analysed. The results show that the firms’ satisfaction with their economic performance is mainly related to resources that can be denoted as critically supporting. More specifically, there is a strong negative relation between this variable and weaknesses regarding sales and marketing and lack of capital, while there is a positive relation to education, economic experience and entrepreneurial orientation. Customer satisfaction is most affected by critical supporting resources. There is a positive relation between customer satisfaction and the use of special production methods, high quality ingredients, homemade and traditional products and customer contact.
