This paper investigates producer-input supplier and producer-buyer linkages in the Australian Pig Industry. The objectives of the research were to investigate:

• The marketing alternatives used by the Australian pig producers, reasons for their choice of a particular alternative, and the nature of the relationship between the producer and buyer.

• The present and anticipated relationships between the producer and external influencers other than the buyer - such as feed suppliers, veterinarians, consultants and other producers (through membership of a producer buyer or seller group).

• The relationship between external linkages and the scale, growth, and technical, financial and marketing performance of individual pig producers.

The key finding was that farm-level change drivers, in particular producers’ linkages with veterinarians and other input suppliers, had a greater impact on quality, technical, and financial performance than their relationship with buyers which are in most cases, processors.

The Australian pork processing sector lacks technical efficiency, and is plagued by overcapacity and low capital investment in new plant and equipment. The difficulties faced by this sector are not conducive to them driving market and structural changes within the pork sector.

The poultry industry and to a lesser extent the pig industry both in Australia and overseas, exhibit coordination structures that show a higher degree of vertical coordination than other animal industries. Both industries show elements of the “industrialisation” of agriculture, though the poultry industry is more highly industrialised than the pig industry. While a number of overseas studies, especially in the United States, have addressed the implications of structural change in these industries there is little recent information about the Australian situation.

Preliminary face-to-face interviews were conducted to develop an understanding of current industry issues, after which a mail survey of 1126 Australian pig producers with over 50 sows was conducted. A response rate of 49.7 percent was achieved.
