Traceability of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) will be of great concern in the near future. The EU (European Union) has already indicated that a far-reaching traceability system in every link of a supply chain will be mandatory in the near future. Products derived from GM varieties of important crops like soybeans, maize and rapeseed (Canola) are already commercially available. These GM varieties are traded as commodities like any other traditional variety. The logistical infrastructure of commodities is configurated in such a way that large quantities can be transported efficiently. However, the proposed regulations by the EU may lead to problems for different parties in a commodity supply chain with respect to the compulsory guarantees for current labelling. Several companies try to meet these guarantees by implementing an IP (Identity Preservation) system. An important part of such a system is a good control strategy. However, the development of a strategy must take into account the various interests of the stakeholders. In this paper a qualitative analyis for two supply chains is outlined. These analyses make clear that a control strategy must be developed in close co-operation with the analysis of the specific supply chain.
