Nowadays, inventory and comparison of chains, linkages, quality systems and issues are the starting point of any chain research project. This paper describes a different approach for comparison of quality systems focused on food safety issues in a defined part (from pig farm to meat processor) of the pork chain. First, a framework was set up to relate aspects of food safety to operational quality systems, containing general aspects of quality systems like standards, inspection, quality assurance, sanctions and communication that were divided into different levels. Quantitative and qualitative comparisons were then carried, presented here in comparison tables.

The quantitative inventory checked whether aspects were present or absent, scores were ascribed at each level with a weighing factor and then classified. The qualitative inventory was worked out in unique elements and weaknesses of the quality systems. The unique elements were valued by ascribing scores, which were weighed and classified. The results of the quantitatively and the qualitatively based inventories, showed a remarkable similarity in the final score for the quality systems HACCP, GMP at slaughterhouse level as well as the Integral Supply Chain Management System (in Dutch IKB) and BRC-inspection system. The general framework of this presented approach can also be used in other applications in the future.
